Happy Friday My Friends!
Those dirty bad guys. Over the past few weeks people have been reporting a new sextortion scam on Reddit, claiming to have “proof” that your spouse is cheating. This is a twist on the old scam where scammers pretend they hacked your computer and threaten to share embarrassing videos unless you pay them $500 to $5,000.
This time however, they’re using real names, addresses, and other personal info stolen from recent data breaches, like the NPD breach we recently reported on. You might think no one falls for these scams, but they made over $50,000 in a week when they started in 2018. Scammers have tried all sorts of tricks since then, like fake hitman threats, bomb scares, CIA investigations, and even ransomware
The Takeaway
Reporters at BleepingComputer.com talked to people who got these scam emails. Some said the links asked them to log in, while others thought the links tried to spread malware. Thankfully, sextortion scams have been around for years, so most people knew they were fake and just deleted the emails. But they were still upsetting.
Remember, these emails are scams. They’re not true, and you should never click on the links. If you get an email like this, just delete it.
Stay safe out there.
