Hello Friends,
Have you ever been to a website where you have to verify your identity and once you put in your info, it brings up old jobs, places you've lived and phone numbers that you've completely forgotten about?
Well the company that gathers and stores all that info just got hacked. According to Bloomberg, the breach is considered the biggest ever and it's from a company you've never heard of: National Public Data (NPD). Here's the short version:
NPD is a company that performs background checks on US residents.
Criminals breached their database and stole over 3 billion records of personally identifiable information (PII) including past addresses, dates of birth and social security numbers.
The cybercriminal group USDoD posted the stolen information on a dark web forum, putting it up for sale for about $3.5 million.
The Takeaway
Pentester.com, has set up a tool to see if your data was part of the breach at https://npd.pentester.com. If you see your info on there, NPD is advising the public to setup credit monitoring services. Many of the big banks offer this service for free with your credit card or you can use one of many free services such as Credit Karma from Intuit.
And if you’re especially worried about identity theft or have had an incident, there’s another option: A credit freeze, which prevents new credit from being issued without your direct permission.
This is not going to be the last breach - stay on top of your credit score and bank statements!
Stay safe out there.
