What the Twitter hack means for you

Twitter was just hacked and the story is getting more interesting every day.

It all got serious when some high profile Twitter accounts almost simultaneously made an unusual tweet on Wednesday, July 15th. This included presidential hopeful Joe Biden, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, President Barak Obama, Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Microsoft founder Bill Gates, former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and investment mogul Warren Buffet. On each of their twitter profiles a message was posted almost simultaneously where each claimed that they wanted to give back to the community and if you were to send them bitcoin, they would send it back to you doubled. So essentially, they would double your money.

While it may sound ridiculous that anyone would be fooled into sending bitcoin in response to these tweets, an analysis of the BTC wallet promoted by many of the hacked Twitter profiles shows that on July 15th alone, the account processed 383 transactions and received almost 13 bitcoin valued at approximately $117,000.

Now if you go down the Twitter rabbit hole, the story has been evolving and it’s starting to look like most if not all of Twitter’s accounts may have been compromised, even those with 2 factor authentication and it could have been an inside job. In fact, here at our company someone accessed our Twitter account today! Luckily Twitter will send you an email when this happens – we caught it right away, logged into our account and changed the password (whew!).

So, keep an eye on your inbox, especially in the coming weeks for any notices from Twitter. I’m sure we’re not out of the woods yet and that we’ll be hearing more about this story as the investigation continues. Until then, stay safe out there.
