Amazon Prime Days is an annual promotional event with discounts applied to thousands of top-selling products. But of course, all the excitement is shared by scammers who every year hustle to take advantage of the event, piggybacking on the excitement and fervor to take advantage and steal from distracted shoppers like you and me.

The Takeaway

The scammers have been preparing for months. While the Threat Report goes into detail on this, here are my top 3 tips to keep you from becoming a victim:

Go straight to Amazon, not the link in the message.
Scammers love sending fake “order problem,” “account locked,” “refund,” or “delivery issue” texts and emails during Prime Day. Instead of clicking the link, open the Amazon app or type Amazon.com yourself and check your orders or messages there.
Be suspicious of deals that feel too good or too urgent.
Prime Day creates pressure to act fast and scammers use that urgency to push fake websites, fake ads, and lookalike product pages. Slow down, check the seller, read recent reviews and make sure the website address is really Amazon.com before entering any payment information.
Never pay outside Amazon or with gift cards.
A real Amazon purchase will not require you to pay by gift card, wire transfer, crypto, Venmo, Zelle, or a separate payment link. If someone says you need to pay another way to fix an order, claim a refund or unlock your account, treat it as a scam.
