Apple has just released iOS 18.2. So what does this mean to you?.
The good:
The update includes Apple's own AI, called "Apple Intelligence" and the ability to use OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which is now integrated with Siri for the first time. There are also some really fun additions such as Image Playground that lets you create stylized images based on prompts and images of you and your friends and Visual Intelligence that uses the camera to identify objects and places around you such as a restaurants, read text, search for items on Google, ask ChatGPT questions about objects and more. The concerning: The update includes over 21 security updates, many rated as highly critical such as fixes to the iPhone Kernel and WebKit, the engine that underpins the Safari browser. They're patching flaws that allows attackers to execute code with elevated privileges on your device. It means that once they have access, a bad actor could install software to spy on you, extract data or intercept data sent and received from your phone. The Takeaway Apple is not giving users the option of staying on iOS 17 if you have a iOS 18 compatible device, so the security holes must be pretty serious. Unfortunately Apple hasn't given the public many details about exactly what’s been fixed in iOS 18.2, presumably giving the world's iPhone users time to update their devices before the criminals swing into action.
To upgrade, go to: Settings > General > Software Update
Go ahead and upgrade to iOS 18.2 as soon as you can.
