Usually I have a helpful weekly email with some tips to keep you safe but this couldn’t wait.
If you tried to get a coffee at Starbucks within the past hour or so, you’ll notice that their credit card machine is down. We did some digging and it turns out that all of their terminals are down and it isn’t just Starbucks, it’s Square merchant processors across the country.
The issues started being reported on Facebook and Twitter from panicked business owners at around 9am HST and is still ongoing. If you are a business owner using Square, this is likely going to affect you. An outage of this scale and magnitude is usually due to a hack – payment processors have extensive, redundant networks. This kind of thing doesn’t happen by accident.

That website is Square’s official page and they will be posting updates on this outage there. Hopefully service will be restored soon.
