School is back in session and so is cyber bullying

cyber bullying

Happy Friday My Friends! School is back in session and no matter how much administrators have tried to keep bullying to a minimum, the bullies have just shifted their activities to harassing fellow students on-line. Cyber bullying is the use of technology, like social media, text messages, or online platforms, to harass, threaten, or embarrass someone. It includes actions like spreading rumors, sending mean messages, or posting harmful content about a person. Cyber bullying can cause emotional distress and have serious effects on mental health, leading to anxiety, depression, or even suicidal thoughts. It differs from traditional bullying because it can happen anytime, is often anonymous, and can spread widely online. For example, in February of 2023, Adriana Kuch, a 14-year-old from New Jersey, died by suicide after being bullied online. A video of her being attacked at school was shared on social media, leading to further cyber bullying. This tragic event highlights the severe impact cyber bullying can have on young people.

The Takeaway Look for the following signs of cyber bullying:

- Changes in mood, like anxiety or sadness.

- Avoidance of social activities or school.

- Reluctance to use devices or becoming upset after using them.

- Sudden changes in friends or behaviors.

What to Do About It:

- Offer emotional support and listen without judgment.

- Document incidents by saving messages or screenshots.

- Block or report the bully on the platform.

- Monitor your child's online activity and set boundaries.

- If your child is bullying others, address the behavior promptly and teach empathy.

Cyberbullying isn’t going anywhere, so it’s important for parents and adults to know how to spot it and deal with it. Recognizing the signs early and taking action can make a big difference in helping kids who are being targeted online.

Stay safe out there.

New Friday Funnies

I went to Washington DC and when I was there, I saw a bee going from flower to flower.

I exclaimed, "now that's a US Bee!"
