Scammers now emptying bank accounts using fake parking tickets

Hello Friends,

Parking tickets are the newest way that scammers are sucessfully emptying out bank accounts. The trend is successfully popping up across the mainland, from New York to Southern California. Just this week Calgary fell victim to this scam, and it's only a matter of time before it surfaces here in Honolulu, if it hasn't already."

How can I tell if a parking ticket is real?

Unfortunately, it's not easy. The fake tickets look nearly identical to the real ones with one key difference: the website or QR code used to pay the ticket. It will direct you to a convincing website designed to get you to hand over banking information, credit card numbers and sensitive data.

Here's what one looks like:

The Takeaway

If you do get a parking ticket, go to the Hawaii State Judiciary's eTraffic website located at:

At the bottom there's a field where you can enter your citation number. If it's not found, it could be a scam.

And, if you do end up with one of these fake parking tickets, let us know so that we can help get it into the hands of law enforcement.

Stay safe out there.
