How to avoid the sad announcement scam

sad

Happy Friday!

Is there anything these scammers won't try to get at your money? This week a new tech support scam hit inboxes across America that's using a deceptive "sad announcement" subject line to lure victims into reading the message. The scam exploits your emotions and curiosity and it's after the passwords to your email and bank accounts.

The scam emails typically follow this pattern:

Subject line: "Sad announcement: [First name][Last name]" or "Sad announcement from [First name][Last name]"

2) Content: A brief message referencing photos or memories, designed to grab your attention. It includes a lure to click a link to see pictures about "the old days" or something like that.

3) Ends with an inspirational quote, to differentiate the message from others in your crowded inbox.

The sender spoofs their address to appear as a friend or family member. They likely found your address from inside a compromised account of someone you've communicated with in the past.

The Takeaway

Some quick tips so that you or someone you know doesn't become the next victim:

1) Always double check the sender's email address before clicking on links inside the message.

2) Don't call phone numbers displayed on suspicious websites. Always double-check the url.

3) When in doubt, reach out with a method you've used before such as by phone or even, shocking, face-to face contact!
