Happy Friday
With the election only 87 days away and the next presidential debate coming up in about a month, scammers are taking advantage of the heightened political activity to supercharge their efforts.
What red flags should I be looking for?
We're seeing malicious emails designed to trick citizens into making false election contributions. These emails exploit legitimate marketing services to create convincing but fake donation pages, with the goal of scamming everyday people out of money disguised as donations to election campaigns.
Who's behind them? According to cybersecurity research firm Trellix, China-linked threat groups like Volt Typhoon are leading the pack, accounting for 68% of all detections.
Next in line is the Russia-linked APT group Sandworm, followed by Iran’s threat groups, whose activities align with its geopolitical aims and involvement in the Israeli-Hamas conflict.
The Takeaway
Election scams are nothing new, but generative AI, like ChatGPT, is. These bad actors are using AI to write convincing emails, assemble legitimate-looking websites in minutes, and create text messages and automated phone recordings that are almost indistinguishable from the real thing.
If you want to support your political party and be absolutely certain that your contribution isn't going to a scammer, go direct! Here you go:

Use common sense and remember that bad actors will exploit political events, not just now, but in the future as well.
Stay safe out there.
